The Name of New Theatre Revealed

LONDON - Royal Holloway, University of London has announced that its new £3m theatre will be named after world-renowned playwright Caryl Churchill, according to University of London.

With a career spanning six decades, Churchill is widely regarded as Britain’s greatest living playwright whose work has been performed around the world.

The announcement comes as Churchill’s latest play, Love and Information, prepares to open at London’s Royal Court Theatre.  This is the first full-length play by Churchill in six years.

Professor Dan Rebellato, Head of the Department of Theatre and Drama, said: ‘Caryl Churchill is internationally recognized as one of the key playwrights of the last 100 years. To be able to name our theatre after Caryl Churchill is a great honour for the College and just recognition of her restless theatrical creativity.”

Professor Rebellato added: “Caryl Churchill is a playwright, but has also worked extensively with devising companies, music theatre, physical theatre and dance. She spans the very broad range of teaching specialisms and research interests here. That she is a woman is additionally appropriate for a College with a strong history of women’s education.”

The Caryl Churchill Theatre is a new state-of-the-art performance space, designed by Foster Wilson Architects. The architect Tim Foster is delighted by "a great choice of name" and added "we will be proud to be associated with it". Due to open early in 2013, the Caryl Churchill Theatre will offer an intimate and flexible space for 21st century artists and scholars to further enrich the exploration of theatre and performance.
