University of Jordan and University of Maryland to Sign MoU

AMMAN - A delegation comprising faculty members and administrators from the prominent University of Maryland/ College Park, led by its President Professor Wallace Loh, will be visiting the University of Jordan (UJ) on April 22, 2013, to explore potential areas of mutual collaboration with the University, according to University press release.

The visit, in cooperation with the School of International Studies and Political Science at UJ, will highlight through an agreed memorandum of understanding, the intent of increased cooperation between the two universities in the field of strengthening research and developing activities. In addition, the agreement will seek to address the exchange of faculty and students for the purposes of research, teaching and study and other collaborative assignments and projects.

This visit is of utter importance for both parties concerned, as it is the first time that University of Maryland signs an MoU with a university in the Middle East.

The University of Maryland visit comes at a time when UJ, led by its President Professor Ekhleif Tarawneh is striving to reach universality and seeking to improve the University’s world ranking position which will in turn help in achieving internationalization and gaining global recognition. Professor Tarawneh has been increasing his efforts to promote quality education and highest research standards.

Joining the University of Maryland delegation will be Charles Caramello, Associate Vice President for Research and Economic Development and Director of Corporate Relations, Ross D. Lewin, Associate Vice President for International Affairs, and Shibley Telhami, Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development.

University of Maryland/ College Park is one of the preeminent public research universities that was founded in 1856. It is ranked number 19 among public universities in the US and 38 of the world’s top 100 universities according to the Shanghai Academic Ranking.

The University has produced six Nobel laureates, seven Pulitzer Prize winners and more than 40 members of the National Academies and scores of Fulbright scholars. The University’s budget is approximately (1700) Million Dollars, of which (500) Million Dollars are for funded research.
